Then Joseph Woke Up.

{Please excuse the blurry photo. I enjoy writing scripture daily in my journal, and I felt that these powerful words deserved to be shared.}

We all know the story. Birth, baby, Jesus, manger. But I find that each time I read this incredible story, there is new wonder to behold and fresh insight to take away.

One of the things I always find truly amazing is that Joseph followed God’s commands from the angel. This incredibly strong man had such a solid faith. The sentence and message that really stands out to me this year is:

“Then Joseph woke up.”

Right after that quick, short, direct statement in Matthew chapter one, the story continues to explain that after Joseph woke up from his dream, he did exactly what God had planned for him.

How many times do we need to theoretically “wake up” and clearly listen to what God has for us? Joseph had qualities that provided him with the immense strength that would be necessary to endure the radical journey ahead of him. I think all of us long for that type of faith. These elements enabled him to not only trust in God, but trust Mary (and I think we all know how difficult that must have been). These “Joseph Steps” are:

1-Faith
2-Obedience
3-Strength
4-WAKING UP

These four simple qualities can transform our world when applied do our daily lives. Perhaps God has called you to something that feels insanely out of your comfort zone…too big and too out of reach to take on. If you are like me, maybe you are confused or uncertain at times about how to live out a life of trusting God when it just doesn’t seem practical. It begins with having faith that surpasses our understanding, being obedient when it feels uncomfortable, allowing God to give you strength when you feel like giving up, and waking up ready to do what He has called you to do.

There are many reasons why the story of Jesus’ birth is inspiring for each of us, but today, I am focusing in on the beautiful fact that the birth of this baby caused ordinary people to step up and become used in extraordinary ways for God’s kingdom. The birth of Jesus ignites a desire to be bold, faithful, and used mightily for purposes that are greater than us. What a beautiful opportunity.

God is amazing at putting puzzle pieces together and orchestrating incredibly perfect circumstances. It wasn’t random coincidence that Mary & Joseph were chosen to be the parents of His only son. Both Mary & Joseph had all of the qualities above. Because of their great faith, strength, and obedience, we have this amazing story of Jesus’ birth…this incredible picture of the start of our salvation.

This Christmas eve, take the time to remember why and what we are celebrating. If you feel like the stories are boring and you already know them, I get it. But challenge yourself and re-read these today (you can read in Matthew 1 or Luke 2) and find something new and refreshing about this amazing story that resonates with you.

Remember that while Mary and Joseph were chosen, they were just people. Humans like you and me. They had fears, doubts, concerns, and limitations. What will you overcome and conquer by waking up today?

{Merry Christmas Eve!}

    God love us so much. He love us with unconditional love, who would ever think or care for these human beings who sometimes are so stubborn. But God is really our Father who never gave up, for He knows we can change to goodness if we do it.
