A Very Special Father’s Day

Father’s Day has always been an interesting day for me, filled with mixed emotions. Coming from a broken home, it isn’t always easy to figure out how to celebrate these days that are so simple and effortless for other families I would watch.

When my Dad {who is “technically” my step dad who adopted me when I was about 5 years old, but he is 100% my real dad} proposed to my mother, he told her that the best part of the deal was gaining her children.

This man stepped into a role that he didn’t have to. He didn’t have to be my dad…he didn’t have to love me…pay for my braces…throw slumber parties for me…deal with my boy problems as a teenager…hold me when I cried…laugh with me when I needed it…discipline me when I needed direction…or trust me to go out on my own. But he has truly been there for me every step of the way, including walking me down the aisle just 3 months ago as I married my husband.

One of my favorite memories with my dad was at my 1st grade “father daughter dance.” I was nervous about going to this dance, like a young woman going on her first date. This 6 year old was getting to know her new dad, and couldn’t believe how lucky she was to have the best date in town. It was a 50s themed dance, and I was wearing the gorgeous pink poodle skirt that my mom made for me. As we walked into the gymnasium, my father took my hand and asked me to dance with him.

I felt like the luckiest girl in the room, as I watched other girls dance with friends while their dads sat like wall flowers. I’ll never forget how my girl friends would ask my dad to dance with them, too, and he would. He was the best dad. He was my date to many dances, like the one below where I dressed up like Sandra Bullock from “Miss Congeniality.”

Three months ago, I got to dance with my handsome dad at my wedding…and it is a memory I will never forget.

This article is dedicated to my dad. The man who has changed my life, formed my personality and sense of humor, and made me the woman I am today. I love you, Dad, and words will never express how deeply I love you and am thankful for you.

  1. Your story is so similar to mine it’s scary!! My dad – the wonderful man who raised me, did everything for and with me and who walked me down the aisle – adopted me and my sister when he married mum when I was 5!!! I am so thankful to God for giving us someone who stood in the gap and who loved us even though he didn’t have to, and who went over and above in so many ways. I have two more sisters now – born when I was 6 and 8, but there has NEVER been any difference made and he has never said anything about us not being his real daughters. They are our sisters – not half sisters – and he is our dad!! Thank God for special men xxx
