Faith is to be awake.

“There are things we can do
But from the things that work there are only two
And from the two that we choose to do
Peace will win
And fear will lose
There’s faith and there’s sleep
We need to pick one please because
Faith is to be awake
And to be awake is for us to think
And for us to think is to be alive
And I will try with every rhyme
To come across like I am dying
To let you know you need to try to think”

-Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots

The song above is one that my fiancé showed me and I absolutely love it, especially the lyrics I quoted. It has always been easy for me to live in fear. Stress and anxiety are second nature to me. My heart speeds up, my mind clouds, and my soul drains.

But I have come to realize that we always have a choice. Faith is a choice. Not an easy one, but it is, in fact, an option. In the song, one of the lyrics say:

“And it’s that we’re all battling fear.”

My wedding is in a week. My skin is breaking out. I’m sick. It’s looking like it will probably rain on the wedding day (and it is an outdoor wedding).

Fear is natural. But our God is supernatural. I choose faith. I choose joy. I choose peace. Because how ridiculous is it for me to choose anything else when peace is what Jesus left here for me? He sacrificed it all for us to have the abundant life.

For some of us, this battle may mean smiling through rainy weddings, overcoming illness, grieving losses, and simply not understanding His plan or why we are here sometimes. But this faith will provide us with a beautiful life, a beautiful outlook, and a peace that snaps us out of the darkest hours.

Faith is to be awake.

  2. Thank you for this reminder today. A few years back I remember hearing a speaker at a retreat say that the abundant life is the normal Christian life. If we aren’t living abundantly in the Lord, then we are falling short of all He has for us. It’s hard to believe the every day life He wants for us is in abundance, but it’s true. Praying for your wedding, for you to get better, and for a beautiful day as you make a covenant before the Lord.
