Son of God

“I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.”
-John 15:11-15

Tonight, I was very blessed with the opportunity as a film review blogger {hence my film review you are currently reading} to attend a special screening of “Son of God.” Before the movie even began, there was something stirring in my heart that made me a bit emotional and excited.

I was in Los Angeles, the city I felt called by God to move to 5 years ago, sitting in a packed theater filled with others who shared this same passion for bringing the light and love of Jesus to not only our broken city, but the entire world. Even more incredible, I was sitting next to my fiancé. It struck me that I was sitting next to the man I get to change the world with…love God with…dream with. I was able to take in the entire experience while holding hands with my hero.

Before the film started, we had the pleasure of hearing the film producers Roma Downey (who also played the role of Mother Mary) and Mark Burnett speak about their experiences while filming. It was incredible to hear such prominent Hollywood producers talking about their love of Jesus, their faith, and the power of prayer.

Burnett shared a story about when they were filming in the Moroccan desert for 6 months. He said that they hired a snake wrangler to de-snake the sets each day, usually taking away one or two cobras.

However, there was something unique about the day they were going to film the scene with Jesus on the cross. On that day, 40 snakes were surrounding the cross and had to be removed. {Just a bit of symbolism there.}

The film was absolutely incredible, and really gave great insight into the life of Jesus. What I really loved most about it was the focus on his ministry and relationships in a bit more detail, which made me just want to know him even more. The one thing that stuck out to me most was truly watching his relationships with the disciples play out…how they really did life together…ate together, wandered together, conquered together.

When I saw Jesus speak to his disciples as friends, all I could think was I wish I had been there…to know him like that…to be his friend and be right there with him through all of his teachings, living, and ministry. This film definitely inspired me to want to become even closer to Jesus and connect in a way that only someone who knows him could.

With this film, and with continued study of scripture, I believe that more minds will have a better understanding of who he is, and hearts will have a closer connection to the greatest love story ever told.

I am so thrilled to see a film like this being made, supported, and well received. It is a story that I hope everyone has the opportunity to know.

“Son of God” is officially out on February 28th, and I highly recommend it. Spread the word, and make sure you get your tickets to this amazing film.
