The definition of wellness in the dictionary is:
The state or condition of being in good physical and mental health.
While that is pretty incredible, and important, I believe that definition is missing a pretty key element. Spiritual wellness.
As most of you know, I am a certified Christian yoga instructor, personal trainer, and sports nutritionist. There is something truly beautiful about being able to worship God with every bit of us. If the Holy Spirit lives in me, shouldn’t I cultivate a healthy home full of wellness for Him to work in me and through me?
One of the reasons I love not only doing fitness classes, but teaching them, is that I’m able to turn that into my place of worship. This past weekend, I was incredibly blessed to be able to go with my dear girlfriend, Rachel Z. Davis, to the International Christian Wellness Conference. When we were in the midst of a Holy Yoga session, I found myself in child’s pose, completely humbled, eyes closed, listening to the beautiful words of a worship song. Right there on that yoga mat, my heart, body, mind, and soul were all completely connected to God and surrendering to Him with everything I had.
This conference reminded me of how much I love praising God with every bit of me, and it also reminded me of how important it is that we are truly well. Some of you might be thinking why wellness, why yoga, why fitness, why any of it? So many women struggle with insecurities that are so deeply rooted in defining themselves for their bodies. We misuse these temples that God entrusted us to…at least I know I have. So for us to surrender it all over to Him, and learn how to take care of ourselves through Christ, and encourage others to do the same is an amazing gift.
After leaving the conference and coming back to crazy, hectic Los Angeles, I remembered how valuable it is to just get away for a while. Jesus often spent time in quiet places of sacred refuge. My incredible friend and mentor, Rachel Z. Davis, will be leading a retreat in Big Bear Lake this October where you have the opportunity to get certified as a Christian wellness coach while being surrounded by God’s beautiful creation, spend time in worship, and experiencing this process with others just like you. I will be on this retreat, and can’t wait to become certified as a Christian wellness coach. As part of the course there will be hands on nutritional and healthy cooking workshops and food experiences, hikes, moving meditations, fitness classes, Christian Yoga and personal wellness growth for students!
Gaining the skills to be able to be spiritually, mentally, and physically well is priceless education that will not only change our lives, but the lives of others. I challenge you to pray about going on this retreat. Pray about considering becoming a wellness coach, so that God can use you as an ambassador for Him to help bring others to wellness through Christ. This retreat is a time for breaking out of bondage, escaping the lies we tell ourselves, and learning how to honor God with everything we have to offer. Join me on this journey!
When I think about how incredible this retreat will be, the lyrics of this song truly say it all for me and provide the most beautiful visual:
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.
